Tucked in on Foundry Street and gracing the Athens community since 2011, Fuel Hot Yoga is a studio that welcomes all yogis from beginners to experts. With over 35 classes per week and a new student intro month of 30 days unlimited for $30, all of your yoga needs are sure to be satisfied.
Just a short walk through the breathtaking studio and you will wonder why it took you so long to try out a Bikram class. But, that’s not all they offer. You’ll find Hot Vinyasa, Yin, Meditation and Intermediate Flow classes on the schedule too. Looking for yoga workshops? FUEL has you covered. In fact, just a few weekends in ago they brought in International Yoga Champion, Gianna Purcell.
In the hopes of gaining some flexibility and good vibes during my half-marathon training, I took one of Fuel owner, Jolin’s, Bikram classes last Thursday evening. Everyone who heard from me after class could tell I was on a bit of a yoga high and for good reason.
Jolin is incredible. Despite never having taken a Bikram class in my life, I felt extremely welcome. Jolin took the time to explain the poses, the technique behind the breathing patterns, and encouraged all students to persevere despite the heat. Jolin is among just one of the six professional and passionate teachers at Fuel.
Luckily, I was able to sit down with her to hear more about her time as a yogi and also as an Athenian.
How long have you been a resident of Athens and what is your favorite part about the Classic City?
I moved to Athens with my husband in 2011. Even on our first trip to Athens before we moved I fell in love with the city. I love so many things about Athens, but the best part is the community and the people here. Everyone is so kind, generous, and helpful. It has the best small town feel and yet the city offers so many amazing things. We have incredibly talented musicians, artists, and non-profit organizations making a real change in our community.
What is the most rewarding part of being a yoga instructor?
To help people. I have endless stories of students, who have changed their bodies, their selves, and their lives through the yoga. In turn, they have changed the communities in which they love and live. I am inspired and humbled everyday by my students. Whether someone is coming in to class to get out of pain, have more energy, or relieve stress the practice starts to change the way you feel about yourself and in turn how you go about the world.
What was the reason you initially started your yoga practice?
I started as a last resort to back pain. I had tried everything else, and I was in constant pain. I was told I needed surgery. I took one class, and I was hooked. I remember being in a lot of pain and in a really stressful time in my life. But when I took my first class everyone at the studio was so kind and so happy. I felt so welcome by the teachers and other students even on my very first class, and I remember that the class and studio became the thing I looked forward to most in my day. I wanted to create that same place in Athens for our community.
What would you say to someone who has never tried yoga before?
Everyone and anyone can benefit from practicing yoga! You don't have to be flexible, good at yoga, in shape, or have done any yoga at all to start! Our classes are designed for all levels. Many new students are nervous about taking their first class or nervous about the heat. And when they come out of class they often say it’s one of the most amazing things they’ve ever done for themselves and they don’t know why they were so nervous to try a class. I always tell first time students from the moment you step into our studio you will see how supportive and welcoming the teachers and our yoga community is. Don't wait, start now! You will be surprised in how many positive ways your life will change through a regular practice. Time to fuel your life and feed your soul!
Yogis from all over Athens come to Fuel for a variety of reasons: flexibility, weight-loss, cross-training, mental and emotional stamina. You will be surprised by the many benefits you receive through a regular practice.
Interested in achieving similar goals? Good news! Fuel will be hosting their Open House this Sunday, January 22 from 8am-6pm. The day will be filled with complimentary classes, deals on yoga memberships, and door prizes. They’ll be giving away a free month of yoga in every class. You don’t want to miss out!
