The One Dollar Question: WHERE THE HECK HAVE WE BEEN?
December 1, 2016
We’ve been MIA. We know. We’re sorry.
And it’s Annie’s fault.
You see, Annie’s been pouring all of her time into UGA HEROs. She’s thrown school out the window, her mother doesn’t remember what her voice sounds like, her friends will probably forget to invite her out this weekend, and our team has been completely neglected.. but it’s for a pretty damn good cause.
It’s such a good cause in fact that several of us have gotten involved ourselves. Eric and Devon have served as photography interns, Lucy is currently killing it as the graphic designer, James is a HEROs vet, and Lily & Halle are currently right there with Annie fighting the good fight.
Today is World AIDS Day—a day to fight the stigma of this disease. A day to remember that HIV/AIDS stigma isn’t retro, it’s just wrong. It’s 2016, and as a society we’ve made a lot of progress, but this specific stigma (like many others out there) still lingers. Today, we acknowledge that. Today we fight.
“I’m appreciative of Explore Athens for many reasons, but one that stands out is the platform it provides for us to talk about the issues we feel strongly about. I don’t want our HEROs kids to keep growing up in a world full of stigma. I don’t want them to be embarrassed to take their pills at school with the fear of being ostracized. I don’t want them to deal with the pain of losing another family member. I don’t want them to have to grow up too quickly. I don’t want them to struggle anymore than the average kid has to.” -Annie
In honor of World AIDS Day, UGA HEROs is hosting a “Dollar Day” fundraiser, where they are asking people to donate as little as one dollar to their fundraising total. You can find the link to Annie’s fundraising page here, and you can get her a dollar on venmo via: @annie-nichtern.
Anyone who donates will be entered in the chance to win one of our Explore Athens stickers. It’s a very small token of our gratitude, but we just want you to know that we are truly thankful for any and all help.
