Athenians are known for their ability to host epic house shows; safe havens where frat guys and gutter punks can mosh harmoniously, discarding inhibitions at the front door. These intimate weekend gatherings are anticipated by students and townies alike, as our Facebook pages light up with event notifications. For those of us who prefer the intimacy of a house show, but need a peaceful atmosphere to soothe our lingering weekend sickness, Sofar sounds is the cure. Sofar host’s monthly shows at disclosed locations in which patrons can attend freely (though donations are encouraged). Featuring local acts and stripped down performances, attendees sit Indian-style and enjoy the delightful acts that our flourishing scene has to offer. Though not exclusive to Athens, Sofar Sounds is run and coordinated by local volunteers who, in the past, have gathered fabulous Athens/Atlanta acts such as Family and Friends, Cicada Rhythm, Mothers, and Ruby the Rabbit Foot. If you like the kumbaya style acoustic performance, but loathe covers of “Wagon Wheel,” Sofar Sounds might be for you.
